Weir Farm

One of our last acts as Connecticut residents was to go see Weir Farm with playgroup this week. We had a lot of fun, the girls had been getting sick of sitting around all day while I was on the phone or something getting ready for the big move.

We drove up there through a beautiful wooded area that Abi kept referring to as the "tree mountains." When we got to the farm-not a farm in the sense of animals-but a huge plot of land, lots of barn-looking buildings and some gardens, Rachael Mackinnon told me a little history of the place. The history was fascinating to me-Weir was an impressionist artist who moved to Utah and married on of Brigham Young's daughters (or daughter's in law or something), Mahonri Young. He was a Mormon, but not an active one. He later moved to this farm in Branchville, CT where he worked on his art. Weir is the man who designed the "This is the Place Monument" and also the statue of Brigham Young that is in the Nation's Capitol Bldg. in DC. I'm not sure why, but I just was drawn in by this history. (Rachael, please correct me if I am wrong on any of this) For more info on the Farm or Weir check out their website.

Our first stop was by Mahonri's art studio. The kids found an apple tree that they thought was really cool. I don't think Abi's actually ever seen an apple tree with the fruit still growing on it before, so she LOVED it!
Abi kept jumping up hoping to catch an apple.

Then we took a walk down to a pond-it was through a wooded area-I had my stroller and ended up having to leave it half way because of all the tree roots. I ended up carrying Emma until we met back up with my stroller.

Then we met up with some more friends and we had a picnic and let the kids play for a while before the drive home. We had a great time!

This little leaf became Emma's best friend-she wouldn't part with it.

James and Abi goofing around after lunch.

We've been trying to squeeze in as much "friend time" as we can before we move next week.

We loved seeing you guys there as well.

Though your history recap is a bit off. Mahonri Young is the man who did the monument at This is the Place park. He married Weir's daughter - and came to live in CT. Weir was the impressionist artist and considered a member of "The 10" - the American Impressionist group at the turn of the century.

I appreciate you putting up with my Humanities aggressive spirit. It kind of goes nuts when I let it out of the bag...

We miss you guys already!!
