This year on May 25th, Steve and I celebrated our 10th!!! Anniversary! I can't believe I've been married to this great guy for 10 whole years and we have 3 beautiful kids to show for it and have lived in 3 different states and many other exciting things that I'm sure you'll hear about or have heard about already.
This year we decided to do something big since 10 years is kind of a big deal...we decided to go on a big trip with just the two of us for the first time since our honeymoon 10 years ago. We picked Cancun as our destination-it was GREAT! The weather was near perfect! The ocean was beautiful, the beach was wonderful, our hotel was amazing and we just had SO much fun!
Our first day there we decided to take it easy and just hang out at the beach. After a few hours of being down there we were already out of our sunscreen so we decided it would be a good time for a trip to Wal Mart-we didn't want to get fried! But after Wal Mart it was right back down to the beach for more relaxing, it was SO great. We felt a little weird with no time constraints or feeling like we needed to rush to get home to the kids or anything, we weren't quite sure what to do with ourselves.
The next day we booked a tour to see Chichen Itza, the ancient Mayan ruines in the Yucatan Peninsula. After a long bus ride we arrived and saw some amazing, old buildings. I think Steve's favorite part was the ball court-it was pretty big and had amazing acoustics-they built it so that when you clapped it would echo 7 times. Apparently 7 was a very significant number to the Mayans, 7 players on each team, 7 echos, etc...It was so HOT too, we were melting! When we were done at the ruins we loaded back up on the bus and headed to a buffet lunch with some Mexican dancing for the entertainment. After lunch it was off to a Cenote for some swimming. A cenote is a sink hole of sorts, it's full of fresh spring water. We didn't actually swim in this one because we only had 30 minutes to get changed, swim, get changed back and get to the bus...we didn't think that would be enough time and we didn't want to hold up the tour group. We kind of regret not doing it, but we had another chance.
The next day was another relaxing day...we rented a Bali bed by the pool overlooking the ocean. It was SO wonderful. We took our books and headphones down and just relaxed. We cooled off occasionally in the pool, ate lunch by the pool, rested, and just enjoyed the scenery. We spent most of the day down there-it was PERFECT!!!
Tuesday was probably the highlight of our trip. Besides it being our actual anniversary it was the day of our Selvatica Canopy tour. We got picked up in a van and, along with a few other people, were driven out to the jungle for FUN! We started off with a zip line adventure flying through the tree tops in the jungle. It was so great. The tour guides were excellent and we never felt in danger or anything, super fun! The only downside was that you can't take your camera on the ziplines for safety reasons so we don't have any pics of us doing that part. After the ziplines we changed into our swim gear and loaded up in an old army truck where we were driven to another part of the jungle for the dune buggy tour. All the groups got in their buggies and we followed our guide all over the place. It didn't take long to realize that it had been raining a few days prior to our arrival-there were HUGE mud puddles everywhere!!! We were completely covered in mud by the time we were done, but somehow that just made it even more fun. After the buggies we ended up at another Cenote to clean off in and to swim in. This one had a fun zip line that you could use to get into the water-definitely the way to go! Steve even did a backflip off of the zip line.
The rest of that day was spent at the beach, soaking it all up for the last day.
We were really sad to be leaving this little piece of paradise, but we also missed the kids so it wasn't as hard to leave as it could have been. Steve's parents took great care of the kids, they had a lot of fun while we were gone and Jim did A LOT of weeding for us, so we came home to happy kids and much better looking gardens! Thanks you two, SO MUCH!
It was an amazing time, hopefully we won't have to wait another 10 years to do another fun trip like this, but we'll just have to see.

ah that looks awsome. im going to have to talk heath into doing something like that for our 10th. congratulations 10 years is worth a very nice kid free trip.
I'm so glad you guys got the chance to get away! And esp that you took that LONG bus ride to the Chitza Nitza(?) ruins. I saw those as a little girl - back when they let you climb on everything. I still remember them (and the heat) - I loved the connection to the Book of Mormon.
The whole trip sounds fabulous. And I totally agree with your comment about suddenly getting use to the idea of no time constraints or kid restraints :)
